While the TV is designed to produce 3D images, it does not contain a 3D transmitter within it. The television comes available with a separate transmitter instead, which can be stuck to the top of the TV using a piece of adhesive strip, then plugged into a port in the back of the TV. The transmitter for the TV is fairly small at six inches across, which doesn't take up too much space unless you already have a Wii or other motion capture instrument set up with a gaming console. The transmitter can also be set up on the desktop, where it is at its most stable.

Even though the desktop that comes with the TV can also function as a wall mount, the TV is better served off of the wall. While the TV is tiny compared to cathode ray tube displays, it now looks a little thick compared to other options on the market. This is due to the LED Pro technology used in the television, which backlights the image rather than lighting it from the side like some of the thinner TVs. The Philips 40PFL9705H screen also features something known as "Ambilight", which generates ambient light on the wall behind the television. This lowers the amount of strain suffered by the eyes and produces a more exciting visual display. This technology uses strips of light on the back of the TV which change color to match the image on the screen.

The new television is able to provide very colorful, high contrast images that are brighter than a 3D plasma television. Some concerns still exist for the 3D technology offered by the TV. The issues faced by the 3D technology of this TV are the same issues faced by all other 3D televisions. In cases where an object is supposed to look as though it is passing through the television and close to the viewers, the image instead seems to split in two. In cases where the 3D effect is less exaggerated, however, the images are astoundingly clear.
While 3D may still be incomplete, the Philips 40PFL9705H beats other TVs when it comes to 2D images, hands down. The images are very clear and move smoothly. The sound is also extraordinary, with a subwoofer attached to the back of the television. A surround sound experience is provided without additional speakers.
The user interface is attractive and easy to use. Device shortcuts can be added to the icon menu. Shortcuts are already included for TV, PC, USB, and Net TV.
Despite the fact that the Philips 40PFL9705H does not feature a built in Freeview HD tuner or 3D transmitter, the television is ultimately well worth a buy. The 3D tech is the best on the market, even if it hasn't been perfected, and the image processing exceeds anything else available.
